MInE Interview

Andie M Long

MInE InterviewHello Andie and thank you so much for joining me today. I hope I haven’t caught you mid therapy session, and I seriously hope you’re going to pay for mine after reading your latest novel! What a mind F***! Seriously, whatever possessed you? Are you the offspring of Satan?

Hahahaha. Thank you for asking me to take part in an interview. I’m being accused of destroying people’s sanity across the nation!

How did you come up with the plot to MInE?

It was bits of things at first that I wrote in a notebook. There are a group of houses down a path from me that were fascinating when I was younger, because they are nowhere near anything else. I found out they were the former houses of Coal Miners so I got a book from the library.
Then I watched another programme about something else that fascinates me and I worked out that would tie in and happen at the end (you’d have to read the book to find out what that is). Up until that point I didn’t even have characters.
One day I was on the bus home from work and there were so many obnoxious people on it. Most oblivious to anything but their phones and the whole beginning bit of the story came into my head and I thought what if I write a book where no-one is likeable. No-one at all and I let them go where they take me.
I used to work in psychiatry and we had a clinic pertaining to the problem Jarrod has, so that was my link to that. I wanted to show that they aren’t the stereotype; they’re as individual as we are. Then I just let the story out and that’s what came out. I’ve no idea where it came from – obviously the dark recesses of my mind!

Who is your favourite character and why?

Millie!!! The innocent child with the tiny peek at a possible hint of evil lol.

Which of the alter egos do you think best suits you as a person?

I think my mindset is most similar to Selma. Going out with friends for coffee and having a touch of mischief about me.

I believe you may need serious psychological help after reading MInE would you like to borrow mine?

Hahahaha I’ve seen one, but it was about my physical health and its effect on my mental health. Perhaps I should go back and take him this book to read lol!

How difficult was this novel to write? Was it one of your most difficult?

This book IS the most difficult I’ve written. It took hours of research – the car accident and how it would affect the body, Melissa’s new career, how to tattoo, the psychiatric issues. The research went on and on and on. Then the timelines. Sitting with bits of paper working out where characters were and when. I kept having to break off to write my rom coms as it was so dark. In all it took 26 months from initial concept to being published.

You have your own alter ego in writing with your dark gritty reads and then your laugh out loud romantic comedies, how easy do you find it to switch between writing to very different stories?

I can switch genres no problem. I can’t stick to one genre though! I write whatever is in my head shouting the loudest.

I have read nearly all of your books but this one had me by my short and curly’s. You have done an amazing job with all of the characters and making sure nothing contradicts each other. What did you find the hardest with writing this story?

Keeping track of the timelines was definitely the hardest thing.

Will there be MOrE of any of the characters?

No. This is a definite standalone. They’ve all gone now. My brain couldn’t take any more of them!! More dark reads though...I’m sure will come but right now I’m back into romantic comedy.

If you could associate yourself with anyone past or present who would it be and why?

Ooh, gosh, I don’t know...I always wanted to be the character Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, living it up in New York with a sparkling writing career and all those shoes!
